SANTA CRUZ

Friday, June 13th, 2008

On the advice of Dominic I stopped off in Santa Cruz for a possible safe harbor for the rest of the night after several lucky rides on 101 in Chilly January California weather. My top layer was a woolen over coat I had picked up in a Goodwill thrift store in Maryland and with the exception of riding on the back of the bike it was the perfect cover-up along with the tweed Apple hat and a nice long scarf. I was early enough on that Friday night to find a coffee shop disguised as a large wooden house, open, that was equipped with a piano and young people singing and dancing. Everyone seemed to be affected by much more than coffee. I found a pay phone in a back room on the first floor and called the number Dominic had given me. Josiah didn’t answer the phone, a young woman did. She explained that Josiah was away for the weekend and she was house sitting. I was invited to spend the night. “Josiah wouldn’t mind,” She said.
I found a map of the town in a rack on the wall and found Josiah’s house without incident. She answered the door after three knocks and a ring on the doorbell. She had little to offer in words but offered tea and showed me the couch. I showered and rested well. In the morning after coffee I walked to where the Rocks of Santa Cruz jutted out along the beach and the seawall. I found my way to the highway and soon caught a ride to San Francisco.
